Zygmunt Abrose Sakowski , 95, of Stevens Point, passed away after a brief illness on Friday, February 24, 2012 at the Portage County Health Care Center. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, February 29, 2012 at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Junction City with Rev. Andrzej Panek officiating. Military rites will be conducted by the American Legion Post 468 of Milladore at St. Michael's Church following the service. Burial will take place later in the parish cemetery. A visitation will be held on Wednesday from 10:00 am until service time at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Junction City. Martens / Rembs Funeral Home is assisting the family. He was born in Wilmington, Delaware on December 7, 1916, the son of Jozef and Marianna (Domurad) Sakowski. At the age of three, the family moved back to Poland. At the age of 21 he returned to the United States. He married the love of his life, Marian Migel on May 11, 1943 in Chicago, Illinois. They moved to the town of Carson in 1953. He worked as a cabinet maker at Vetter's for many years and retired from construction in 1978. He served his country during World War II from 1941 to 1946. He was stationed at many bases in the US and earned his Airplane Engine Mechanical Degree through the US Army. He earned many honors during duty including the Victory Medal, American Theater Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon, Overseas Bar, Service Stripe and Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged with the rank of sergeant. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, woodworking, gardening and reading and was an active member of the American Legion and belonged to the North Central States Carpenters Union. He was involved in the construction of many local facilities, including Sentry Insurance and Ben Franklin Junior High. He is survived by his wife Marian; one brother, Jesse Sakowski, Maryland; sons, Robert (Jacqui) Sakowski, Mount Horeb; Bill Sakowski, New Mexico; daughter, Kathy (Jim) Mansavage, Stevens Point and son, Mike (Renee) Sakowski, Brule, nine grandchildren; Cheryl (Jeremy) Nelson; Fr. Derek Sakowski; Eric and Alison Mansavage; Luke, David, Laura, Mark and Sarah Sakowski and three great- grandchildren, Josiah, Eleanor and Annabelle Nelson. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Jozef and Walter and sisters Anna and Helen from Poland and several brothers and sisters- in-law.
