William was born on August 22, 1944, in Superior, Wisconsin, to Roman and Joan (Haebig) Kastern. He attended St. Francis Catholic School in Superior and vocational school in Marshfield. In the summer of 1966, while working at Weinbrenner Shoe Factory, he met the love of his life Mary Louise Thompson. After a two-year engagement they married on August 21, 1971, at St. John's Catholic Church, Marshfield. They were blessed to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on August 21, 2021.

Since childhood Bill enjoyed painting and drawing but used his artistic ability in woodworking while raising his six children. He went on to building picnic tables, swinging benches and other craft items from wood. His wife and children fondly remember many summer nights of swimming and fishing at Sherwood and Dexterville parks. In Bill's younger days he enjoyed cutting a rug on the dance floor and as he aged, he enjoyed a day out at the casino.

Bill was employed at Felker Brothers Manufacturing for 35 years until his retirement. He was an active member of St. Stephens Church in Chili until the parish closed in 1997. They attended St. Mary's Catholic Church in Neillsville until the time of his death.

Bill and Mary were blessed with six beautiful children, Thea (Jim) Nelson of Fort Atkinson, WI, Patsy (Jason) Taylor of New Richmond, WI, Edward (friend – Rachel) Kastern, of Oshkosh, Heidi (Alan) Swenson of Adams, WI, Christopher (Nicole) Kastern of Shakopee, MN, and Charles (Beth) Kastern of Shakopee, MN. Bill cherished his 12 grandchildren, Kora and Sophia Nelson, Isaac, Clark, Ingrid and Esther Taylor, Ismay Chapin Kastern, Otto, Max, and Leo Swenson, and Peyton and Averie Kastern.

William is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mary, his children and grandchildren, and a brother, John R. Kastern of Waukesha, WI.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Jim Miller, a brother, George Kastern, a sister-in-law, Kathie Williams and a brother-in-law, Samuel Thompson.

William's family would like to thank Davita Dialysis of Marshfield with PD Dialysis (at home), the doctors and nurses of Marshfield Medical Center and Home Health Care. A special thank you to family and friends for all the support given to William the past seven years when he was ill.

A memorial will be designated at a later date.
