William J. "Bill" Breu, 95, Marshfield, died on Thursday, December 18, 2014 at Bethel Center, Arpin.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, December 23, 2014 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Marshfield. Mr. Breu's 6 sons will serve as pallbearers and burial will take place in Gate of Heaven Cemetery where military rites will be conducted by the American Legion Post 54 of Marshfield. The visitation will be held on Monday from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Rembs Funeral Home and on Tuesday from 10:00 am until service time at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
William was born on July 26, 1919 in Auburndale to Joseph and Josephine (Bruckert) Breu and was a 1937 graduate of McKinley High School, Marshfield. He was a veteran of the United States Army serving from December 1, 1942 during World War II until his honorable discharge on January 5, 1946. He served as combat rifleman in the 94th infantry division in northern France, Ardennes (Battle of the Bulge), Rhineland, and central Europe. He was a recipient of the Bronze Star Medal.
Bill was united in marriage to Dorothy L. Blessing on January 21, 1946 at St. Joseph's Hospital Chapel, Marshfield. She died on August 31, 2010.
Bill was employed at Marshfield Brewery after high school with the exception of the war years until 1958. He then worked at the United States Post Office in Marshfield for 26 years until his retirement.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus John Eisen Council #1799, The American Legion Post 54, and the Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 1866. He enjoyed his family, traveling, and stamp collecting. He was very resourceful in household maintenance. His favorite poem was He often sang "You are My Sunshine" by Oliver Hood, and recited his favorite poem, "Purple Cow" by Gelett Burgess.
He is survived by 6 sons and 6 daughters, Bill (Christine) Breu of Effingham, IL, Louise (Joe) Weyerstrass of Davenport, FL, Barbara Hirsch of Wausau, Janet Bowman of Las Cruces, NM, Ken (Leah) Breu of Sparta, Bob (Gail) Breu of Omro, Sue (Paul Bailey) Breu of Sumner, WA, Marilyn (Dave) Peters of Fitchburg, Tom (Sylvia) Breu of Janesville, Chuck Breu (Shelly Hunihan) of Tarpon Springs, FL, Jeff (Marie) Breu of Brighton, MA, and Margaret (Joe) Zirneski of Fitchburg. He is also survived by 26 grandchildren, and 29 great grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his parents, his wife, a grandchild, a great grandchild, 1 brother and 3 sisters.
