Sylvester J. Gessert, 84, Marshfield, died on Tuesday, March 3, 2015 in the Emergency Room of Ministry St. Joseph's Hospital, Marshfield.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am on Friday, March 6, 2015 at St. John's Catholic Church, Marshfield, with Rev. Samuel Martin officiating. Burial will take place in Gate of Heaven Cemetery where military rites will be conducted by the American Legion Post 54 of Marshfield. Grandchildren will serve as pallbearers. The visitation will be held on Thursday from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Rembs Funeral Home and on Friday from 9:30 am until service time at St. John's Catholic Church.
Sylvester was born on April 26, 1930 in Marshfield to Matthew and Josephine (Zahn) Gessert. He was raised in the Bakerville area where he attended St. Mary's School. He enlisted in the United States Army in January 1951 and came home on leave to marry the love of his life, Dorothy A. Egner on October 9, 1951. After his honorable discharge from the Army in 1954, he became employed for Weinbrenner Shoe Company and then at St. Joseph's Hospital until his retirement in 1982.
Dorothy and Sylvester raised 3 wonderful children Kathryn, Mark and Theresa.
Sylvester is survived by his loving wife, Dorothy, of 63 years and their children, Kathryn Gessert of Marshfield, Mark (Bette) Gessert of Stratford, and Theresa (Tom) Hasz of Granton. He is also survived by 6 grandchildren, Annette (Matthew) Woller, Nathan and Nicholas Gessert and Matthew, Brandon and Hannah Hasz and 9 great grandchildren. He is further survived by a brother, Reuben (Marie) Gessert of Marshfield.
He was predeceased by his parents.
A memorial will be designated by the family at a later date.
