October 31, 1934 – July 2, 2023
Robert J. Herkert, age 88, of Marshfield, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, July 2, 2023, surrounded by family after spending the last two days of his life at the cabin he loved in Rib Lake.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, July 7, 2023, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Marshfield, where a visitation for family and friends will be from 9:00 am until service time. His grandchildren will serve as honorary pallbearers. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Marshfield, where military rites will be conducted. Rembs Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Robert was born on October 31, 1934, in Marshfield, to Edward and Adela (Schnitzler) Herkert and was a 1952 graduate of Marshfield Senior High School. He was a veteran of the United States Army serving from 1957 until his honorable discharge in 1959. He married Ruth A. Wartner on August 7, 1965, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Marshfield.
Bob was employed in Marshfield at Roddis Plywood which later became Weyerhaeuser Company for over 40 years until his retirement.
Bob coached 5th through 8th grade basketball and football at Sacred Heart School for many years and served on the school board for several years. He enjoyed spending time with family at the cottage on South Harper Lake where he would sit and listen to country music. He also enjoyed the peace and quiet in the north woods.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Ruth, and their three sons, Paul (Becky) Herkert of Marshfield, Scott (Lori) Herkert and David (Toni) Herkert, all of Verona, WI. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, Anna (Jacob) Keuler, Aaron, Shane (Serena), Jack, Max, Sam, Noah (Kailey), and Julia Herkert. He is further survived by a sister, Irene Susa, and brothers, James Herkert, Lawrence "Bud" (Dora) Herkert, and Ruben (Jo) Herkert.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings, Lorraine Rakovec, Virginia Volovsek, William Herkert, and Florence Smrecek.
