Robert “Bob” Eugene Leggon Jr., son of Robert and Joan Leggon, passed away peacefully on March 31st, 2026, amidst family and in the comfort of his home. Bob was born on July 4th, 1961, in New Britain, Connecticut. Bob will be remembered for his passion for learning, enjoyment of nature, and devotion to faith, family, and friends.
As a young child, Bob knew he wanted to play a pivotal role in the lives of others, and asked God to provide him with a path for serving others. He accomplished this goal by working and caring for his communities as an orthopedic surgeon, specializing in trauma and oncology.
Bob’s academic journey began in Connecticut where he graduated from high school in 1979. After completing undergraduate studies at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania, Bob returned to Connecticut for medical school at Yale University. Bob’s residency in orthopedics was completed at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, followed by a fellowship in orthopedic trauma at Baylor College of Medicine, Texas, in 1993. In 1999, Bob was granted a sabbatical from work to complete a six-month fellowship in orthopedic oncology at the University of Florida College of Medicine in Gainesville. Throughout his career, Bob had many academic contributions with numerous research publications and novel approaches to orthopedic medicine.
Bob met his best friend and the love of his life, Carmella (Schmitz), during his final year of orthopedic residency in Rochester. Together they enjoyed many activities including motorcycling, downhill & cross-country skiing, and running. Bob shared his love of cooking and his passion for music with Carmella. As a couple, they continued to embrace Bob’s love for travel with cross country motorcycle trips and adventures to Canada and New Zealand. They moved to Pennsylvania in 1994 where Bob worked as an orthopedic surgeon at Geisinger Medical Center. Bob and Carmella were married in Mount Carmel, Pennsylvania, on February 17th, 1996 and have been blessed with three beautiful children: Robert III (Bobby), Zachary, and Nicole. In 2002, Bob moved with his family to Marshfield, Wisconsin, in pursuit of a quieter lifestyle and began work as a surgeon at the Marshfield Clinic. In 2006, Bob and Carmella built their country home together as they both enjoyed a more rural setting to live and raise their family. Bob loved spending time with his kids and would be the first to suggest a fun adventure or throw a party, some of which included camping in the secret field, billiards tournaments, and movie nights. He was always proud of his kids and their accomplishments. Bob continued to work at the Marshfield Clinic until 2017 when he retired.
Bob enjoyed and lived life to the fullest. He was always willing and excited to share his passions with his wife, children, extended family and friends. While the kids were growing up, he was active in their sports by coaching their youth soccer teams. He was also an avid biker, challenging himself to see how many miles he could ride each calendar year. Bob had a lifelong interest in hockey, although he didn’t have the opportunity to play as a child. Instead, he started playing as an adult alongside his children. That passion flourished and over the years he coached youth hockey teams and was the most consistent attendee at Marshfield’s pick-up hockey. Being an only child, he lived life by the motto that “friends are family” and Bob certainly found his second family through hockey.
If Bob wasn’t working or being active, he could often be found spending time outdoors. He loved dirt-biking in the woods, boating, and most of all fishing, which was inspired by his father. Bob went on countless fishing trips with a tight knit friend group. Living in the country, he typically had a list of “chores” to do such as clearing his property of fallen trees, overgrown vegetation, and excessive snow accumulation. Despite this work, Bob always relished the next outdoor chore since it connected him to nature and the beautiful scenery. He loved watching thunderstorms, staring at the stars, enjoying sunsets, and listening to the quiet sounds of animals in the morning. He found peace in nature and always strove to leave the world in a better place than he found it.
Bob loved sharing knowledge and fun with others. He was a passionate teacher, hoping to empower others to learn something new. He also had a strong eye for detail and undertook each project with the intention of completing it correctly. It is easy to remember Bob as always striving for excellence in everything he did.
Bob is survived by his wife Carmella, his sons Bobby and Zachary (Laiken), his daughter Nicole, his grandson Rory, and his mother Joan Lake. Bob will be dearly missed by his family and friends. Blessed be his memory.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, April 8, 2026 at Christ the King Catholic Church in Spencer with Father Nathan and Deacon Jeff Austin officiating. Interment will be at Corpus Christi Parish Cemetery in Bakerville. The family welcomes relatives and friends for a time of visitation from 4:00 pm - 8:00 pm on Tuesday, April 7 at the Rembs Funeral Home in Marshfield and from 10:00 am until time of service on Wednesday at the church.
