Richard L. "Dick" Spindler, 92, Rozellville, an American soldier died on Friday, December 30, 2011 at Portage County Health Care Center. A Mass of Christian Burial and celebration of his life will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, January 3, 2012 at St. Andrews Catholic Church, Rozellville. Rev. Eric Berns will officiate and music will be provided by St. Andrews Folk Choir and St. Josephs Resurrection Choir. Burial will take place in St. Andrews Cemetery where military rites will be conducted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6352 of Stratford and grandchildren and nephews will serve as pallbearers. The visitation for both he and his sister, Lorraine Weber will be held on Monday from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Rembs Funeral Home, Marshfield, and on Tuesday from 10:00 am until service time at St. Andrews Church. A prayer service will be held at 7:45 pm on Monday at the funeral home. Richard was born on August 15, 1919 in the Town of Day to Louis and Sophie (Bath) Spindler and graduated from a local school. He was a veteran of the United States Army during World War II. On April 7, 1941 he took his basic training at Fort Custer, MI. He spent 17 months in Iceland, followed by 10 months in England and Ireland. Early in July 1944 he arrived in France. Six weeks prior to his leaving Europe he was transferred from the Fifth Division of the Third Army to company A, 328th Engineer Battalion. With Pattons Third Army he went through campaigns of Normandy, northern France, the Ardennes, the Rhineland, and central Europe. His decorations and citations consist of the Good Conduct Medal, Bronze Star, American defense Service ribbon, European-African-Middle Eastern Theater ribbon with silver battle star, six overseas service bars, and one service stripe. He was eligible for the Purple Heart but turned it down because he thought others were more deserving of it. He married Barbara C. "Bobbie" Bangart on June 23, 1951 at St. Andrews Catholic Church, Rozellville. She died on November 29, 2008. After celebrating his 26th birthday at home from Europe, Dick worked various jobs until he and his wife bought the farm from his parents. Soon life became very busy and hectic as the two of them raised five sons and a daughter. He taught his children many lifelong lessons including the importance of our faith in God and the strength that is needed to rise above the loss of those dear to us. "Life is for the living" was ingrained in us. Strong will and common sense was always displayed. Dick mixed in his sense of humor during the most unexpected situations. He lived with his daughter and son-in-law for nearly three years. She felt very blessed to have him in their home and the thought of every day being Fathers Day. He entertained and gave us much laughter and memories with his one line "zingers" and quick comebacks. Like many of the Spindlers he loved to hunt and fish. Many hours were spent with his sons, brother, Bud, nephews and other relatives on trips to Canada and the "Palace". He loved the game of sheapshead and visiting at Rockys. He received a lot of teasing for trying to get his boat loaded on top of the van by putting it through the ice first! Dad, you are our hero. On May 4, 2011, he and his daughter flew to Washington DC as part of the Honor Flight. He is survived by a daughter, Renee (Duane) Kirsch of Stevens Point, and two sons, Keith (Roxanne) Spindler of Rozellville, and Troy (Pam) Spindler of Mountain Grove, MO. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, Sonja (Troy) Knetter, Logan Spindler, Kobey (Trine) Spindler, Cassie Spindler, Jeremy and Nicole Kirsch, Nathan (Jamie) Moore and Tanille Spindler and four great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, his wife, a daughter, Mary Beth in infancy, three sons, Dean, Scott, and Todd Spindler, grandsons, Adam Willcome and Graham Spindler, brothers, Harold and Melvin Spindler, and a sister, Lorraine Weber on December 29, 2011. Memorials may be given in his name for Alzheimers research.
