Obituary

Richard George Koenig of Stevens Point, WI, formerly of Madison, WI and Rockford, IL, died on Easter Sunday, March 27 2016 at the House of the Dove, Marshfield, WI in the presence of his oldest daughter and his sister. Richard was born September 24, 1946 to Wyoma and George Powell in Columbia County Wisconsin. He and his two biological brothers were adopted by Lawrence and Marilyn Koenig of Beloit, WI and South Beloit, IL where they were raised along with their sister, who was also adopted. Richard was baptized at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Beloit, WI and later chose to follow the Native American and the Buddhist paths to the eternal. Richard attended Beloit, WI and Rockton, IL schools as well as Rock Valley College and Madison Area Technical College. Richard was a Vietnam Veteran serving from 1967 to 1971 as a Medical Service Specialist where he earned the National Defense Service Medal; the Vietnam Service Medal, Air Force Good Conduct medal, Air Force Longevity Service Award and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. Richard worked various jobs during his post-Vietnam years including respiratory therapy technician and various manual labor positions. Mostly Richard was a scholar and rebel and sweet and gentle soul that longed for peace. He is survived by daughters, Colleen & Gary Wright, Melanie Houseman; grandchildren; Nathan & Kailie; Alexandra, Jacob and Christian; brother Daniel & Nicki Koenig; sister Rev. Tina Koenig Ray, step brother Dennis & Debe Barnes: Predeceased by both sets of parents, brother Robert and step sister Monica. Also predeceased by longtime partner Jessie. The family would like to extend their thanks to the many veterans, staff at House of The Dove and friends who helped Rich along the way. We would also like to thank John Person at Rembs Funeral Home and Crematory for his kind assistance during this sad time. Services will be held at a later date.
