Obituary

Father Richard (Dick) L. Pankratz, 78, passed away on October 25, 2025, at Dawn Hill Rehabilitation Center in Bristol, RI.

The second of nine children, Fr. Dick was born on March 7, 1947, in Marshfield, Wisconsin to Raymond J. and Margaret M. (Fischer) Pankratz. He answered God's call early, entering the seminary before high school and studying for the missionary priesthood with the Columban Fathers. He was ordained on June 8, 1974, at Our Lady of Peace Church, Marshfield, Wisconsin by Most Rev. Fredrick W. Freking, Bishop of La Crosse.

Fr. Dick devoted his life to serving the people of Mindanao, Philippines, where he ministered in parishes, promoted vocations, and served in leadership roles. His heart belonged especially to those in remote barrios and on the margins of society, particularly the deaf community and children through his "Save the Babies" program. The Filipino people came to know him for his exuberant spirit, powerful sermons, and deep compassion. On visits home, he helped educate students at Columbus High School. After many years on mission, he suffered a stroke and returned to the United States, living among his Columban Father brotherhood in Bristol, RI until his peaceful return to the Lord.

Fr. Dick will be forever loved and missed by his large extended family. He is survived by his siblings: Audrey Hazen of Mill Valley, CA, Robert Pankratz of Salem, OR, Jean DeNuccio of Wausau, WI, Tom Pankratz of Harshaw, WI, Gordon Pankratz of La Crosse, WI, Barbara Knauf of Coon Rapids, MN, John Pankratz of Billings, MT, and Connie Dieringer of Harshaw, WI; many brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews; and his fellow clergy people and friends of the Columban Fathers.

Never one to pass up a round of Sheepshead, Fr. Dick delighted in playing games and cards with family and friends late into the night. He loved to dance. In true form, his 25th ordination anniversary was celebrated with a live polka band! His 50th Jubilee was celebrated on June 8, 2024, with a Mass and reception with family and friends. Holidays, particularly Christmas, were sacred times when he joyfully brought together parishioners, supporters, and family over laughter and good food (especially Christmas sugar cookies.) He was known for his hand-written letters, faithfully keeping family, friends, and supporters updated on his community's needs and his mission work.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to those who lovingly cared for Fr. Dick: Pam Serbst and Ann Leary, nurses with the Columban Fathers; the staff of Dawn Hill Nursing Home and Hospice; and Ester Chenevert. On Father Dick's behalf we thank all those who supported him in his mission life as he focused on those in need.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am on Monday, November 3, 2025, at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church (1414 W 5th Street, Marshfield, WI), where the visitation will be from 9:00 am until service time. Rev. John Burger will be the principal Celebrant and Homilist. Private committal services and burial will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Marshfield, and serving as pallbearers will be Dennis Dieringer, Richard Knauf, Dennis DeNuccio, David Pankratz, Ben Knauf, Ed Cullen, Father Brian Konopa, Carol Steimetz, and Dave Steinmetz. Rembs Funeral Home is assisting the family.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Columban Fathers.
