Mildred (Millie) Christine Kinnett Opitz was born December 24, 1909, at her maternal grandparents, the Wolvins home in Seward, NE. She was the daughter of Nina and John B. Kinnett and the eldest of three children. She lived her childhood years on the Kinnett family farm near Gohner, NE. Millie attended grade school in a one room country school house and attended high school in Gohner, NE. After graduation she met her future husband, Chris Opitz at a church social and a year later on August 28, 1929, they were married in Seward, NE. Mildred and Chris started their married life on the Opitz family farm 5 miles southwest of York, NE. Three children were born to this couple. A son (1932) living only a few hours, a daughter, Dorothy (1934), and a son James C. (1938). Chris and Mildred farmed during the "great depression" and they depended on the farm animals and used the milk, cream, and eggs which were sold in town to buy their staples. Millie was a vivacious lady who loved to dance and attending the "big band" dances that came to York in the 40's and 50's. One of her favorite sayings was "I'd rather dance than eat". After Jim and Dorothy left home for college in1955, Mildred worked at the local drug store for 25 years and after they sold the farm in 1976, moved to town. Chris started an antique store. Her loving husband, Chris, died in 1985. In July, 2009, 6 months before her 100th birthday, she moved to Marshfield, WI into assisted living which allowed her to be close to her son and daughter-in-law. It is here that she remained, bringing smiles to the lives of the staff and residents with her zest for life and her various and humorous sayings such as "you could have talked all day and not said that" or "whatever will be, will be". Millies memory will live in the hearts of her family and many friends that span decades in age. She leaves a legacy of love for her family, her joy of people and the pleasure of a life well lived. She was a long standing member of the York Presbyterian Church. She is survived by a daughter, Dorothy (Dr. Saeed M.) Farhat, of Ann Arbor, MI, son, James (Carolyn) Opitz, of Marshfield, WI, and a sister, Geraldine (Neale) Vogt of Santa Margarita, CA. seven grandchildren: Sara (Bill) Atwell, Dexter, MI Suzy Farhat (Dave Rehmus), Roanoke, VA, Christine (Terry) Mills, Far Hills, NJ, Jacki (Alan) Reid, Lakeville, MN, Michael (Katie) Opitz, Olympia, WA, Jodi (Michael) Goda, Lakeville, MN, Chris (Diane) Opitz, Anchorage, AK, nine great grandchildren: Amanda and Alea Atwell, Nicholas Rehmus, Meghan Mills, A.J. and Arianna Reid, Jimmy, Jack and Alexandra Opitz. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, an infant son, a brother, Clifford, and a very dear friend, Carl Bluhm. Millie's family wish to gratefully acknowledge the outstanding care she received by the staff at the 21st. St., Wells Nature View facility in Marshfield. Given with a smile and dedication to the welfare of the residents, the care was truly exemplary. Our gratitude and thanks are also extended to Ministry Health Home Hospice for their care and loving concern. Cremation has taken place.
