Matt M. Grassl, 93, Auburndale, died on Wednesday, December 3, 2014 at House of the Dove, Marshfield. A memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, December 15, 2014 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Auburndale, with Rev. Jesse Burish officiating. Burial will take place in the parish cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends from 10:00 am on Monday until service time at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Rembs Funeral Home is assisting the family. Matt was born on February 19, 1921 in Marshfield, WI, to Michael and Barbara (Schulhauser) Grassl. He received his education in Auburndale and spent two years at the University of Wisconsin - Madison taking agriculture courses. He received the Outstanding Young Farmer award in 1955. Matt was involved in many farm and community organizations including Marshfield Co-operative Dairymen's Association, Associated Milk Producers and Junior Chamber of Commerce. He was instrumental in starting the American Breeders Association. He also held several offices at St. Mary's parish. Matt was a businessman farmer initiating many new practices in farming. He also compiled area farmers' income taxes for many years. His hobbies included playing baseball, reading, playing cards, watching the Packers, bird watching and reading articles on his computer. He enjoyed driving his truck in the area to see what local farmers were doing. He married Betsy M. Koller on June 7, 1949 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Auburndale. He is survived by his wife, Betsy and their children, Howard Grassl of Wisconsin Rapids; Suellen (Kenneth) Herwehe of State College, PA; William Grassl of St. Michael, MN; Dr. Charles (Kathy Nottingham) Grassl of Eagan, MN; Mark Grassl of Madison, David (Lois} Grassl of Lakeville, MN. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren: Meghan, Brandon and Lauren Herwehe, Annika and Melissa Grassl, and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; 2 brothers, Richard and Edward Grassl; and 4 sisters, Sister Gladys Ann Grassl, FSPA, Dee Simon, Marie Brehm and Agatha Carswell.
