Mary Mae was born June 15, 1928, in Sherry, the eldest child of the late Elmer and Mary (Spice) Whitney. As a child, she was always proud to be her father's helper on his farm and carried that hard work ethic through life.
She attended Sherry Grade School and graduated from Auburndale High School.
Mary Mae was married to Melvin Salzman at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Milladore on her birthday in 1948. They celebrated their 50th anniversary in 1998. He died on June 11, 2001.
Mary Mae was very active at St. Kilian's Catholic Church. For many years she was the church organist, a CCD teacher, and oversaw the Senior Hot Lunch Site. She loved flowers, birds and cooking. Her greatest passion was her family. She was a full-time stay-at-home mom to her children. Her grandchildren lovingly called her "Grandma Minnie", a name she was very proud of having. After meeting Mary Mae, Philippine artist Von Mendoza was inspired to paint "Grandma Minnie Roses", an artwork to honor Mary Mae's beautiful flower gardens and her gracious nature.
Survivors include her children, Phill (Sandy) of Bartlesville, OK, Steve of Arpin, Carol (John) Hrusovszky, Junction City, daughter-in-law Tabitha (Bart) Forman of Marshfield, sisters Arlene Salzmann, Junction City, and Linda Lou Koplien, Sherry. She was blessed with four grandchildren, Mary (husband Derrick Sorenson) Hrusovszky, Wisconsin Rapids, Brenda Wolosek, Stevens Point, Robin Flatoff, Mosinee, three great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild and her beloved cat, Zak.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin, two sons, Dennis and Chris, one grandchild, Alan Flatoff and her brother, Edmund Whitney.
The family will designate a memorial in Mary Mae's name to Mary's Place in Marshfield.
