Obituary

Mary D. Karaliunas, Nekoosa, was born into eternal life on Friday, February 6, 2015 at the age of 91 with her family by her side. Mary was born on September 6, 1923 in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of the late Juzef and Malgorzata (Nowak) Koziel. She was the beloved wife of the late Peter B. Karaliunas for 61 years and they were married on June 30, 1946 at Five Holy Martyrs Catholic Church in Chicago. She and Peter owned and operated Pete and Mary's Bar in Blenker for over 30 years while raising their five children. Mary's life was totally devoted to her family, taking delight in family gatherings and celebrations, visiting with children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren and playing cards with them. No matter how much her shoulder hurt it never prevented her from special enjoyment of holding babies. Angels were dear to her and held a special place in her heart. She made the most of each day and was proud of her Polish heritage. Mary strongly lived her Catholic faith looking only for the good in others and offering care and assistance to anyone whenever she could. In her later years she became the "social butterfly" at the Retirement Center where she loved the activities – especially bingo. All was put aside to join friends for a spirited afternoon of bingo, concerts, exercise, or just walking the halls while singing "You are my Sunshine". She had a special knack for making newcomers feel welcome. An optimistic, happy person, she wanted others to share in her exuberance for life and her love for others. Everyone was touched by her compassion which reached far beyond her family to so many who needed a touch of kindness. She will be dearly missed by her beloved family and friends. Mary was the loving mother of Patricia (Harvey) Cherney of Blenker, Victor (Mary Ziegelbauer) Karaliunas of Oconomowoc, Mary Ann (Thomas) DeMars of Nekoosa, Rosemarie (Peter) Haydock of Wisconsin Rapids, and Bernard (Maureen) Karaliunas of Milladore. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Anthony Koziel, Genevieve Belczak, Anna Evanoff and Alfreda Polte and a grandchild, Bradley Haydock. A visitation will be held from 9:00 am until service time on Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am on Monday, February 9, 2015 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Nekoosa, with Rev. John Swing officiating. Burial will take place in Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery, Wisconsin Rapids, and grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Rembs Funeral Home, Marshfield, is assisting the family. In lieu of flowers memorials may be designated in her name to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Nekoosa. Condolences may be sent online to www.rembsfh.com
