Marvin F. "Smokey" Duerr, 94, Marshfield, died peacefully on Sunday, October 16, 2016 at Golden Living Center, Three Oaks in Marshfield. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am on Friday, October 21, 2016 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Marshfield, with Rev. Savarimuthu Selvalaj officiating. Burial will take place in Brooklawn Memory Gardens Cemetery in the Town of Richfield, Wood County, where military rites will be conducted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1866. Serving as pallbearers will be all of Marvin's grandchildren, Douglas, Craig, and Bradley Berndt, Michael and Mark Hahn, Scott and Andy Guldan, Eric Riedel, Kristin Tieman, Amy Schmidt, Jamie Luepke, Katie Duerr, Jeff and Tim Karl and Janice Johnson. The visitation will be held from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm on Thursday at Rembs Funeral Home and from 9:30 am on Friday until service time at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. The Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary will conduct a memorial service at 6:00 pm on Thursday at the funeral home. Marvin was born on September 1, 1922 in Goodrich, to Charles and Erna (Strege) Duerr and attended Athens Schools. He began his military service in 1943 with the 2nd Air Force Medical Corps until 1945. He then continued to serve in the United States Army serving during World War II from 1945 until his honorable discharge in 1947. Marvin was united in marriage to Alvina Stencil on April 26, 1947 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Athens. She died on December 27, 2003. Marv and Alvina farmed in Goodrich until 1951 when they moved to Marshfield. He then worked for the Soo Line Railroad, Roddis Lumber Company and then the majority of his career bartending at the Spot Bar and Edgetown Bar until his retirement in 1985. Marv was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and a lifelong member of the Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 1866 and the American Legion Post 54, both of Marshfield, and the Fraternal Order of Eagles Badger Aerie 624 of Marshfield. He enjoyed spending many summers camping and fishing in Tomahawk. He is survived by his children, Carol (Dennis) Berndt of Merrill, Mary (Richard) Hahn, Sally (Donald) Riedel, and Allen (Wendy) Duerr, all of Marshfield. He is also servived by 15 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren. He is further survived by 2 brothers, Edwin Duerr and George Duerr, both of Marshfield, 2 sisters-in-law, Theresa (Walter) Tiry and Virginia Konrardy, both of Marshfield, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, his wife, a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Roy Karl, and brothers, Willard, Clarence and Roy Duerr. Condolences may be sent online to www.rembsfh.com
