Marlene R. Lance, 75, died on Sunday, August 28, 2011 at Gold Horizons II, Marshfield, with her family by her side. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, September 2, 2011 at St. Josephs Catholic Church, Stratford. Rev. Eric Berns will officiate and music will be provided by Roni Steines-Machtan and Linda Spindler. Burial will take place in the parish cemetery in the Town of Eau Pleine, Marathon County, and serving as pallbearers will be her grandchildren and honorary pallbearer will be Jason VanDerLeest. The visitation will be held on Thursday from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Sauter / Rembs Funeral Home, 901 South Weber Avenue, Stratford, and on Friday from 10:00 am until service time at St. Josephs Catholic Church. St. Josephs Parish Council of Catholic Women rosary service will be held at 4:00 pm on Thursday at the funeral home. Marlene was born on February 25, 1936 in Erie, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Homer and Zora (Applebee) Smock. She was raised in Cranesville, PA and graduated from Northwestern High School in Albion, PA. Marlene had a passion for music, especially Gospel music and was an accomplished soloist and organ player for most of her life, singing for many weddings and other events throughout Erie County and was chosen to be the soloist for the State Farm Show in Harrisburg, PA. She enjoyed playing cards, crocheting, collecting many pictures of family whom she dearly loved. She was united in marriage to Harry Dibble in 1954 and they divorced. She later married John C. Lance, Sr. in 1968. She is survived by her children, Denise (Edward) VanDerLeest, Diane (Jim) Mullen, and John (Heather) Lance, Jr., all of Stratford and Shawna (Paul) Knauf, of Marshfield. She is also survived by ten grandchildren, Rhonda, Mark, DuWayne, Alex D., Cassie, Abbie, Mercadies, Alex, Johnean, and Mattalyn and by seven great grandchildren. She is further survived by a sister, Bonnie (Chuck) Bolan of Erie, PA. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband John and children, Connie and Matthew who all died tragically, the result of an auto accident on April 14, 1972, and by a grandson, Jason VanDerLeest.
