Obituary

Marie A. Pawelko, 87, of Marshfield died on Monday evening, February 3, 2014 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30am Friday, February 7, 2014 at St. John The Baptist Catholic Church in Marshfield with Fr. Sam Martin officiating. Burial will be in Holy Family Cemetery in Stanley. Visitations will be from 9:30am Friday at the church until service time. Rembs Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements. Marie was born on May 5, 1926 in Thorp to Henry and Celia (Figura) Horban. As a child of the Great Depression, Marie grew up on her family farm in Clark County. Her strong work ethic came from her family's beliefs and she instilled that work ethic into her children and grandchildren. Marie was united in marriage to Joseph Pawelko on June 5, 1948 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Stanley. He died on November 24, 2007. They farmed the Pawelko farm at Diamond Lake near Lublin, WI for over 60 years. Marie had many vocations during her lifetime including wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, waitress, gardener, seamstress, Lublin 4-H organizer, St. Stanislaus Catholic Church choir director, Lublin Homemakers organizer and township assessors. She had only an eighth grade education but mastered the State of Wisconsin Assessorship exams and was an assessor for more than 20 years. Joe and Marie sold their family farm and moved to Marshfield. Marie was an active participant in her life with her strong independent ways who lived life by her own terms. She was an active member of St. John's the Baptist Catholic Church. She is survived by her children, Shirley (Darrel) Shufelt of LaCrosse, Steven (Bonnie) Pawelko of Rhinelander, Daniel (Monica) Pawelko of Marshfield and Diane (Neil) Ketterling of Lufkin, TX; 6 grandchildren, Doug Shufelt, Scott (Susan) Pawelko, Jennifer, Edward, Theresa (Brandon) Nelsestuen and Amy Pawelko and great grandchildren, Alex, Austin and Alyssa Shufelt. She is further survived by two brothers Pete (Rose) Horban of Pittsville and Mike Horban of Grants Pass, Or; two sisters-in-law Stella Horban of Tomahawk and Emily Horban of Stanley. Proceeded in death by her parents and husband Joseph, by her grandson Brian, four brothers, Walter, Sam, John and Joe Horban, two sisters Sophie Lockhart and Catherine Greenwalt. Memorials may be designated to St. John The Baptist Catholic Church Building Fund. There will be a luncheon at St. Bernard's Parish Hall in Thorp following the committal service at Holy Family Cemetery in Stanley. Condolences may be sent online to www.rembsfh.com
