She graduated from Spencer High School (1952) and continued to earn a certificate from St. Joseph's Hospital School of Radiology in Marshfield, WI. Lucy then worked at Milwaukee Children's Hospital in the radiology department while pursuing studies in clinical laboratory medicine at UW-Milwaukee. Afterwards, she graduated from St. Joseph's Hospital School of Medical Technology (1959) in Marshfield, WI, and Adams State College of Colorado (1964) in Alamosa, Colorado, where she received a Bachelor of Arts in biology. Most of her professional work was in clinical hospital laboratories, especially microbiology. The last 13 years of her career, she was a laboratory supervisor at Eagle River Memorial Hospital in Eagle River, WI.
She was married to Carl Christensen in Colorado and later was divorced. Then she moved back to the family farm in 1987 to help care for her family and has lived there since. In the meantime, she boarded dairy heifers for ten years after her return home. Throughout her adult life, Lucy loved to travel both internationally and nationally with friends and family extensively.
She is survived by her children Inga (Chris) Johnson, Alex (Janelle) Christensen; 4 granddaughters Emma, Mollie, Sarah (David) Path, and Katie (Ben) Seehafer; and 5 great-grandsons Devin and Grayson Path and Arthur, Ethan, and Elliot Seehafer.
Preceding Lucy in death are her parents (Frank and Olga Cherney), three sisters (Elaine, Amy, and Rose), one brother (Bill), and one grandson (Luke Johnson).
At Lucy's request, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Defenders of Wildlife or Marshfield Area Pet Shelter (MAPS).
