Obituary

LeRoy (Roy) O. Wanta, age 88, of Junction City, passed away peacefully with loving family by his side at Ministry St. Michael's Hospital on Wednesday, July 29, 2015. A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 15 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Junction City with Rev. Dr. Timothy Roser officiating. Family will receive relatives and friends from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the church. Military rites will be conducted at the church following the services. Roy was born June 29, 1927 in Rosholt, WI to the late Otto and Esther (Garski) Wanta. Roy was in the US Navy during WWII and served aboard the USS Nantahala in the Pacific Theater and East Asia. After his honorable discharge from the military Roy came back to central Wisconsin to live, work and eventually married the love of his life, Gladys L. Berg. Roy and Gladys (Glady) recently celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary. They raised six children. And though three of their children live in various western U.S. states, the entire family remains close and always spent/spends as much time as possible with Mom and Dad. Roy retired from Junction State Bank in 1987 as Executive Vice President. His career as a banker spanned 35 years. During that time he got to know virtually everyone in the Junction City area. His son Rick and daughter Nancy both spent time working at the bank with him. An opportunity neither would have traded for the world. He was also on the Bank of Athens Board of Directors, retiring from that position in 1991. Roy was a tireless individual who held several positions and belonged to many organizations. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Junction City. He was Junction City Village Treasurer for 35 years. He was also a member of the Junction City Volunteer Fire Department for 30 years and served as its secretary/treasurer for 17 years. As a member of the Lions Club International for nearly 50 years he was presented with the Distinguished Service Award, Lion of the Year Award, and the Melvin Jones Fellow Award for Dedicated Humanitarian Services. Roy was also a commander of the former American Legion Post#281 of Junction City. Last September he traveled to Washington D. C. on the Never Forgotten Honor Flight, chaperoned by his oldest son, Jim. Even with his dedication to civic duties and extra curricular activities, he still found plenty of time to spend with his family and friends. He loved to be outdoors and spent as much time as possible hunting and fishing until he lost most of his vision. Roy is survived by his loving wife, Gladys of Junction City; daughters, Nancy (Jim) Steuck of Junction City, and Mary Kay (Ted) Tennessen of Las Vegas, NV; sons Jim Wanta of Wisconsin Rapids, Rick (Mary) Wanta of Chandler, AZ, Joe (Trudy) Wanta of Sugar Land, TX, and Ken (Cristina Altobelli) Wanta of Stevens Point; sisters, Virginia (late Arnold) Wayerski of Sun City, AZ, and Elaine (David) Blaskowski of Stevens Point; 11 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to the entire ER and Intensive Care Unit staff at St. Michael's Hospital who helped make Dad's final days and hours as comfortable as possible. You also helped make our remaining time with Dad a beautiful and peaceful experience. Your dedication, knowledge, care and compassion will forever be appreciated. Martens/Rembs Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements. Condolences may be sent online to www.rembsfh.com
