Obituary

Lawrence J. "Popeye" Schreiner passed away at the age of 92 on the morning of Wednesday December 2 at Golden Living Center 3 Oaks, Marshfield where he had been a resident for 4+ years. There will be no funeral services per his wishes. Popeye was born on February 6, 1923 in Park Falls, Wisconsin to the late Frank and Rose (Bradl) Schreiner. He attended Park Falls schools. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1945 and did Occupation Duty in Japan until 1946. He was then in the Reserves until he was called back to active duty in October 1950 for the Korean War where he progressed up the ranks to First Sergeant. He was in the front lines in combat until he returned to the states in August 1951. Upon his return, he met Ms. Lorna Jane VerKilen. They were married on June 25, 1952 in Marshfield. Lorna passed away January 5, 1976. Popeye worked as a painter/wallpaper hanger during the early years of his career. In the winter months he sold Christmas trees to supplement the family income. He purchased his in-laws tavern, Minnie and Swick's, in 1974 and operated it till 2005 when he fully retired at the age of 82. Survivors include his children: Linda (Jim) Bauer of Stratford and Larry (Rita) Schreiner of Stratford. His grandchildren: Matthew Schreiner, Beryl Schreiner, Andrew Schreiner, Carlie Schreiner, and Lorna Schreiner. Popeye was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, his step-father Louis Gotz, 4 brothers (one in infancy) and 4 sisters. Our thanks go out to the present and prior staff at 3 Oaks who did their best to keep Dad comfortable the last 4 years. Special appreciation is extended to Jon and Betty, his true friends in life, who visited him at the nursing home every week. Jon also visited him, to have supper every Friday, when Popeye lived at his home in Marshfield. Heartfelt thanks to our cousin Barb in Henderson, NV who sent a card for each and every occasion, and some random cards in between. All of you deeply enriched his life. All who knew Popeye, will miss him. Rest in peace, dear Father. For the first time in 40 years, you can spend Christmas with mom. 'The wind died down and it was completely calm: Mark 4:39. Rembs Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements. Condolences may be sent online to www.rembsfh.com
