Obituary

Joseph (Joe) Robert Kain passed away Saturday, January 20, 2018 at Three Oaks Health Facility. A receiving of friends by the family will be from 1-2:00pm, followed by a prayer service at 3:00pm at Remb's Funeral Home on Wednesday, January 24. Refreshments will follow the service, and all are welcome. Joe was the eleventh of thirteen children, born to Francis and Florence (Mayberry) Kain on August 7, 1928 in Hettinger, North Dakota. He was the last surviving member of the family. For 42 years Joe was a teacher, ranging from a one-room country school to an Earth Science teacher in Bottineau, Williston and Rolette, North Dakota. In 1965, he and his family moved to Marshfield, Wisconsin, where he taught Earth Science at Marshfield Junior High School until his retirement in 1990. Besides his family, his great passion in life was advocating for teachers' rights, both as an active and retired teacher. He worked tirelessly for all teachers, and served on the Legislative Committee in Madison, as well as holding various offices at the local and state levels. On August 20, 1955, he married Carol Larson at St. Cecelia's Catholic Church in Harvey, North Dakota. Together, they raised 4 children: Michael (Carol) of Puyallup, Washington; Geoffrey (Lisa) of Ormond Beach, Florida; Alison of Marshfield; and John (Angela) of Woodbury, Minnesota. Joe is survived by his wife, Carol; his 4 children; his sister-in-law, Phyllis Kain of Kent, Washington; his niece, Susan Larson of Rhinelander, Wisconsin; and his grandchildren: Tyler (fiancée Anya) of Seattle, Washington; Riley of San Diego, California; Julian (Nichole) of Longmont, Colorado; Morgan of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada; Delia (John Potts) of Northfield, Minnesota; Rachel of Omaha, Nebraska; Corinne, McKenzie and Elizabeth of Woodbury, Minnesota. He was preceded in death by his 12 siblings, his parents, several nieces and nephews, mother- and father-in-law John and Theresa Larson, brother- and sister-in-law Dale and Doris Larson, and nephew Allan Larson of Rhinelander, Wisconsin. Joe will be greatly missed for his dry wit, his gentle loving nature, and his love of education. Memorials may be given to the Marshfield Research Foundation for the study of Dementia, or to the charity of your choice. A special thanks to the Angels of Mercy at Heartland Hospice, and to the staff of Three Oaks for the kind and loving care they provided. Goodbye, Papa Joe. We love you and will miss you very much.
