John F. Smrecek, 91 of Marshfield died peacefully on Tuesday, November 4, 2014 at his home with his family at his side.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:15am Saturday, November 8, 2014 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Fr. Savarimuthu Selvaraj and Deacon Ray Draeger. Dorothy Gehrke along with Sacred Heart Catholic Church Funeral Choir will provide the music for the service. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Marshfield with military rites conducted by the American Legion Post # 54 of Marshfield.
Visitations will be from 9:30am Saturday at the church until service time. There will be the 4th Degree Honor Guard, Knights of Columbus Assembly # 1219 at the church from 10:00am until service time.
John was born on April 30, 1923 on the home farm in Willard to John and Eva (Pietka) Smrecek. He attended North Mound School in Willard prior to being drafted in the Army. He served in the United States Army in the Philippines during World War II. When he returned, he worked for General Motors in Janesville for 3½ years. During this time, he married Florence F. Herkert on his birthday in 1949 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. They moved to Marshfield where he worked for Weyerhaeuser Co. from 1950 until his retirement in 1988.
During his retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his family. He often went to the cottage in Tomahawk, grew a beautiful garden and loved to make wood. John was an avid bowler, played cards and enjoyed word searches and puzzles.
He was an honorary life member of the Knights of Columbus, 4th Degree Assembly # 1219, active Boy Scout leader for 10 years, member of Sacred Heart Church; it's Holy Name Society and was an usher. John also belonged to the American Legion Post # 54 of Marshfield and the Columbus High School Galleon Club.
John is survived by his wife Florence, children, Betty (Michael) Meyer of Muskego, Ed (Mary) Smrecek of Appleton, Jim (Shelly) Smrecek of Sherwood, Ken (Kaye) Smrecek of Merrill and Pam (Mike) Wawrzyniak of McGuire AFB, NJ; 16 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. He is further survived by his siblings, Wilma Flaherty of Maple Grove, MN, Ralph (Betty) Smrecek of Willard, Tom (Marlene) Smrecek of Waconia, MN and Mary Ann (Chuck) Brinkman of Marshfield.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters Josephine Nelson, Theresa Fries and Marge Fildes and one brother Daniel Smrecek.
