Obituary

John Burns Roherty, 88, of Marshfield, entered eternal life on Wednesday, February 10, 2016 at the House of the Dove after an extended battle with cancer. Born Feb. 22, 1927, in Rock County, John grew up in Edgerton through high school, playing with successful basketball and football teams. He entered the U.S. Navy toward the end of his senior year to serve during World War II. He was stationed at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center and the San Diego Navy Base, during which time he was a medic and served guard duty for German POWs. After the war he attended Milton College. He married his former Edgerton High classmate and bandmate, Margaret M. Ferando on Sept. 10, 1949, in Edgerton, where they lived before later residing in Monroe, Appleton, Menominee, Mich., Green Bay, Janesville and Marshfield, where they have lived since 1965. He was a longtime employee of Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., having trained at the Akron headquarters and working his way into management and later ownership of Badger State Tire Center in Marshfield after starting at Felker Tire. After he sold the business, John retired and continued to enjoy other part-time work, golf and woodworking, along with volunteering at St. Joseph Hospital. He was a member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, where he sang with the men's church quartet. He was a longtime member of Elks Club 665, where he served as a District Deputy and Exalted Ruler, and a member of American Legion (Post 54) and Knights of Columbus (Council No. 1799). He is survived by his wife, Margaret; six sons, Mark (Laura) of Thiensville, Richard (Debra) of Marshfield, Timothy (Elizabeth) of Green Bay, Daniel (Karen) of Appleton, Michael (Geralyn) of Marshfield, and Gerald of West Bend; a sister, Ruth Ann Kaufmann of Lacombe, Alberta; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nephews, nieces and cousins John was preceded in death by his parents, Mathew and Josephine (Burns) Roherty, along with his sister Marjorie Koesterer and many Irish aunts and uncles. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:30am Tuesday, February 16, 2016 at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Marshfield with Fr. Eric Berns officiating. Cindy Penker and Roni Machtan will provide the music for the service. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Marshfield. Military rites will be conducted at the church by the American Legion of Marshfield. Visitations will be from 5-7pm Monday at the Rembs Funeral Home and again on Tuesday at the church from 10:30am until time of service. There will be an Elks Lodge of Sorrow at 6pm Monday followed by a Knights of Columbus Rosary service at 6:30pm both at Rembs Funeral Home.
