James F. Sternweis, age 94, of Marshfield, Wisconsin, passed away on Good Friday, April 3, 2026, at Marshfield Hospital. He was born on June 25, 1931, to Anton and Margaret (Dierienger) Sternweis.
Jim was born and raised in Marshfield where he spent his entire life on the family's rural dairy farm. Farming was not just his livelihood, but his true passion. He built a prosperous farming operation and took great pride in raising both his family and his life's work on the land. Even into his 90s, Jim remained active in the daily work of the farm. Last October, he was still in the tractor working the fields and continued hauling calves twice a week to Equity. He passed the family farm on to his son Daryl while continuing to support his son Jerry in their shared work.
Jim married the love of his life, Genevieve "Jenny" Fischer, on November 12, 1952. Together, they built a life centered on family, faith, and hard work, raising six children. In addition to farming, Jim was deeply involved in his community, serving on the board of directors for AMPI, M&I Bank, Marshfield Hospital, and Columbus High School, and was a member of the Rotary Club and Knights of Columbus.
Jim and Jenny spent 30 winters in Harlingen, Texas, where they enjoyed playing cards, golfing, and sharing good Mexican food with friends. He loved to travel and explored widely, visiting Europe, Alaska, Hawaii, Central America, and destinations across the United States. He was an avid golfer and was especially proud to have achieved a hole-in-one.
Jim will be remembered as an incredibly hard worker who never sat still. He was generous, dependable, and always willing to help when needed. Known for saying he had "no time for small talk," Jim preferred action over words, yet he built deep and lasting relationships. He found great joy in playing cards-spending four to five days a week at the senior center, which became his second home. Above all, Jim was a devoted husband, father, and a man of deep faith.
He is survived by his six children: Fred (Mary) Sternweis, Connie (Jim) Jazdzewski, Tom Sternweis, Jerry (Kay) Sternweis, Daryl (Brenda) Sternweis, and Renee (Mike) Sternweis; 21 grandchildren; and 35 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Anton and Margaret Sternweis: his brothers, Leo Sternweis, John Sternweis, and Tom Sternweis; and his sisters, Cecelia Brandl and Melinda Gropp.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, April 10, 2026, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Marshfield, Wisconsin, where the visitation will be held from 9:30 am until service time. Rev. Daniel Thelen will officiate. Rembs Funeral Home is assisting the family.
