James John Schultz, Ph.D., 62, of Santa Monica, CA, passed away on March 27, 2014 at his residence there. He was born on August 22, 1951, in Marshfield, the son of Theodore and Clara Schultz of Marshfield. He attended Sacred Heart Elementary, and was a 1969 graduate of Columbus High School. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Chemistry from UW-Madison, and then received his Ph.D. in biochemistry from Florida State University-Tallahassee in 1983. He worked for the Southwest Research Foundation in San Antonio, TX, for six years, and then worked for seven years for the Biogerontology Research Center in Glendale, AZ. While there, he was also an Associate Professor of Chemistry at Arizona State University-Tempe. He was currently employed as a research scientist at the VA Medical Center in Los Angeles, and was also on staff at UCLA. His research at the VA Medical Center was in the areas of Alzheimer's disease, prostate cancer and brain trauma. Jim was a long-time member of The Endocrine Society, and had written or co-written numerous articles dealing with his research, which were published in that journal. Jim very much enjoyed his research work; but even more, he loved returning to northern Wisconsin for fishing, camping, canoeing and enjoying the beautiful scenery and the changes of season in the north woods. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Theodore and Clara (nee) Grassl Schultz, of Marshfield, three aunts and five uncles. He is survived by two aunts, Loretta Leiteritz (Grassl) and Marcella Giguere (Schultz), both of Wausau; and by several cousins. Committal services will be 12 noon on Wednesday, April 9th at Gate of Heaven Cemetery with Fr. Eric Berns. Visitations will start at 9am Wednesday at Rembs Funeral Home until service time.
