Obituary

James R. Cherney, 72, Milladore, died with his family by his side on Friday, October 5, 2012 at Unity Residence Assisted Living, DePere, after a long, courageous battle with cancer. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am on Thursday, October 11, 2012 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Milladore, with Rev. John Ofori-Domah officiating. Entombment will take place in Forest Hill Cemetery Mausoleum, Wisconsin Rapids. The visitation will be held on Wednesday from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Martens / Rembs Funeral Home, Junction City and on Thursday from 9:30 am until service time at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. Jim was born on July 23, 1940 in Milladore, the son of Lambert and Marie (Hertel) Cherney and attended Milladore Grade School. He was a graduate of P.J. Jacobs High School and later received degrees in Business Administration and Computer Science from the University of Wisconsin, Stevens Point. He was employed as an accountant for 20 years at Lullabye Furniture, Stevens Point and then as a computer operator at Consolidated Papers, Wisconsin Rapids, which later became Stora Enso. He married Bonnie Wolcott in 1962 and they later divorced. Jim was an athlete and an avid sports enthusiast. He devoted his life to fitness for over 40 years enjoying running, biking, swimming and baseball. One of the highlights of his baseball career was playing in the Senior World Series of baseball. He is survived by a daughter and 4 sons, Suzanne Stromberg of Tucson, AZ, Steven(Annette Honsa)Cherney of Green Bay, Scott (Mary Minch) Cherney of Custer, Shane (Holly) Cherney of Cedar Grove, Shaun (Kaia) Cherney of Auburndale. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, Josh, Nathan, Cassaundra, Mikayla, Patrick, Andrew, Kaylee, Brooklyn, Alyssa, Jenna, Ryder and Sawyer and 1 great granddaughter. He is further survived by 8 brothers and 3 sisters, Francis (Beverly) Cherney of Milladore, Richard (Karen) Cherney of Junction City, Marvin (Judy) Cherney of Franklin, Ellen (Sylvester) Schroeder of Wisconsin Rapids, David (Bonnie) Cherney of Milladore, William (Karen) Cherney of Milladore, Patricia (John) Dekarske of Wisconsin Rapids, Jerome (Debbie) Cherney of Ithaca, NY, Henry (Heather) Cherney of Hewitt, Terrance (Kate) Cherney of Richland, WA, and Peggy (Michael) Kosloski of Junction City. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Mary Ann Mayer and her husband, Leo Mayer, and a brother, Thomas Cherney. Condolences may be sent online to www.rembsfh.com
