Jacqueline Anne Theby Ley, 85, died peacefully on November 10, 2014 at Forest View, Cedar Community in West Bend, Wisconsin.
Jacqueline, known as "Jac" and "Jackie" to her friends and loved ones, was born to Raymond (Ray or "Roman") and Margaret Theby (Blaschka) on December 1, 1928 in Marshfield. She was raised with her elder sister, Patricia (Kaiser) in the home that was built by her great-grandfather Blaschka. Because he wanted sons, Ray called his girls "Jac" and "Pat." The names stuck and fueled both girls' independent spirits. Jac graduated from Marshfield High School in 1946; she began work at Felker Brothers and shortly after that, met and married Norbert Alouis Ley. The couple moved first moved to Evanston and settled in Rockford, Illinois. They had two daughters, Jennifer Ley (Kit Skarstrom) and Gretchen Ley. Jackie and Norb were active in their parish, the civil rights movement and the International Christian Family Movement (ICFM); they hosted guests from abroad and attended the 1967 ICFM Retreat at Notre Dame. After Norbert's tragic death of a heart attack at the age of 45, a pregnant Jac moved her daughters back to Marshfield in January, 1969. She gave birth to a third daughter, Letitia (Eric Johnson) and re-established her home with the love and support of her friends and family. Jackie served as Columbus High School's first Development Department Director; she forged numerous, lasting academic funding relationships. She later worked at St. Joseph's Hospital and Figi's. She gave readings during masses at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church and attended religious retreats throughout the state. After Jennifer and Gretchen graduated high school and left home for college, Jac married Norman Michael Ley in 1980 and moved with Letitia to Glendale. Jackie volunteered through Good Hope Catholic Church and made a pilgrimage to the Holy Lands. In 1996, she and Norman moved to West Bend, where Jac volunteered in the local middle school's literacy program and attended trips to Wisconsin historic sites, museums and theatres with a Cedar Community women's group. Norman passed away in 2006 after a lengthy decline due to Alzheimer's disease; Jac had been dedicated to his care. Jackie was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia shortly after Norman's death; she suffered her own prolonged deterioration due to the disease. A life-long lover of the written word, Jac was a passionate supporter of childhood and adolescent literacy programs. During her life, she engendered a love of reading and learning in her own children through library trips and shared reading suggestions. Jackie faithfully maintained her "birthday book," which included the birthdates of all of her friends and family members. A thoughtful and highly organized woman, she sent cards written in beautiful script to all of her loved ones for birthdays, holidays and special occasions until she lost the ability to read and write due to complications associated with Lewy Body Dementia. Jackie is survived by her sister, daughters, nieces, nephews and many beloved friends.
She was predeceased by her parents, parents-in-law (Louis and Bozena "Beatrice" Ley) and brothers- and sisters-in-law (Bishop Felix Ley, Ralph Ley, Herbert Ley, Beatrice Lee, Raymond Ley and Dorothy Bores).
A visitation will be held on Sunday, November 23, 2014 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Rembs Funeral Home, 300 S. Oak Avenue in Marshfield. A luncheon will follow on the same day, beginning at 1:30 p.m. at the Vintage House, 10150 Highway 10 in Marshfield.
The family asks that you consider a donation to the national literacy program, Reading is Fundamental (www.rif.org) in lieu of flowers; a Facebook group has been established to share pictures and memories (Friends and Family of Jacqueline Theby Ley). A grave marker will be placed at the foot of her parents' grave (Raymond and Margaret Theby) in the Marshfield Gates of Heaven cemetery."
