Obituary

Gunars Z. Virsnieks, 85 Junction City passed away on Thursday, March 25, 2021 at Marshfield Medical Center, surrounded by family. Services for Gunars Virsnieks will be on Saturday, May 1, 2021 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Junction City. Visitation from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Service at 10:30 -11:00 a.m. The service will be live streamed at www.facebook.com/rembsfuneralhomes. The Pastor, Rev. Dr. Timothy Roser will officiate. Military rites will be conducted at the church following the service. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery, Town of Grand Rapids. Martens / Rembs Funeral Home is assisting the family. Gunars Virsnieks was born on July 18, 1935 in Jelgava, Latvia. In October 1944 his family fled the country of Latvia because of communist takeover. They went to Poland for a short period of time and then to West Germany. In July 1950 they came to the United States and lived in Washington Courthouse, Ohio. In 1951 the family moved to Milwaukee. He attended high school and in 1953 he served in the United States Army where he served in Germany from 1954-1957. He married Apollonia Pflugel May 26, 1956. They had their first son (John) and left Germany on June 27, 1957 to come to the United States. On July 4, 1957 they settled in Junction City, WI where they resided until his death. He served in the US Army for 21 years. He was a PUFL (paid up for life) member of the American Legion Post – 468, Milladore, WI. He was also a life member of Veteran's of Foreign Wars Post – 10162 Auburndale, WI, a member of Navy League of the United States, and a member of Moose Lodge #1472, Stevens Point. Gunars worked at Consolidated Papers, Kraft Division, Wisconsin Rapids for 28 years. He was an electrician & instrumentation journeyman. He retired in April 1995. His wife (Apollonia) of 64 years survives. Their children John (Shelly) Virsnieks – Stevens Point, WI; Albert Virsnieks - Jasper, AL, and Ingrid (Martin) Burkhardt, Junction City. He is also survived by 4 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. He was preceded by death by his parents Peteris and Zenija Virsnieks, brother – Arthurs; grandsons – Eric Virsnieks and Albert Virsnieks Jr.
