Esperanza Formantes Sarino, M.D., 98, of 600 Highland Ave., died January 28, 2013 at her daughter's home, surrounded by family. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on February 2, 2013 at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church with Father Eric Berns officiating. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery with John, James and Joseph Bersalona, Edgar Sarino, John Kuhn, Henry Vidrio and John Amery serving as the pallbearers. Jason and James Sarino will serve as honorary pallbearers. Visitations will be from 9 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. A time for remembrance will be from 10:30 a.m. until service time. Rembs Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements. Esperanza was born on March 20, 1914 in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte, Philippines to Paulo Formantes and Cunegunda Raval. She was educated in the Philippines, receiving a Doctor of Medicine from the University of the Philippines in 1938. She was united in marriage to Dr. Epafrodito Cruz Sarino on May 9, 1939, in Laoag City, Philippines. After her medical schooling, she worked at a few medical facilities. She worked at the Philippine Christian Colleges (PCC) as a school physician until she and her husband immigrated to the United States in 1968. The first year, she worked at Muscatatuck Psychiatric Hospital in Indiana. She then joined the Veterans Administration Hospital in Marion and Indianopolis, Indiana, until she retired in 1982. She is survived by her children, Dr. Edgardo Formantes (Dr. Milagros Ona) Sarino of Henderson, NV, Rachel Sarino (Dr. Fernando) Bersalona of Marshfield, WI; Emmanuel Formantes (Benita Reyes) Sarino of St. Peters, MO.; grandchildren, Edith Melanie Sarino of Parker, AZ; Edgar Sarino of Henderson, NV; Edenn Sarino (Henry) Vidrio and their sons Michael and Christian of Arcadia, CA; Sgt. Major, Ret. John (Carrie Ramos) Bersalona of Kansas City, MO; Dr. James Bersalona of Troy, MI; Joseph (Mindy Guthrie) Bersalona and their children, Jaden and Jenna of Harlingen, TX; Janelle Bersalona (John) Kuhn and their children, Caleb, Logan, Maya, Noah and Jade of Marshfield, WI; James (Rachel Sivarama) Sarino and their children Rohan and Elyza of St. Charles, MO; Jasmin Sarino (John, Ph.D.) Amery and their children Elaine and Julia of O'Fallon, MO; and Jason (Jennifer Bundy) Sarino and their sons, Colin and Max, of St. Charles, MO. Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings Francisca, Encarnacion, Amador, Librada, Paulo, Jr., and Adelaida.
