Obituary

Dr. Robert Henry Kalsched of Marshfield passed away at the House of the Dove on Sunday, October 5th, 2014. He was 97 years old. Born in Detroit Michigan, he moved to Marshfield as a teenager and graduated from Marshfield High School. He then attended the University of Wisconsin and Marquette Dental School in Milwaukee, graduating in 1942 and establishing a dental practice in Marshfield which lasted 40 years. During the Korean War, he served two years as a major in the U.S. Air Force and was head of a dental clinic at Webb Air Force base in Big Spring Texas. Dr. Kalsched was active in dental education in Wisconsin, giving lectures on ceramics and full mouth reconstruction to local dental groups. He was elected to the American Academy of Restorative Dentistry and served as President of the Central Wisconsin and Wood County Dental Societies. He was a member of Rotary International, the First Presbyterian Church, and was a 32nd degree Mason. While in Dental School in Milwaukee Dr. Kalsched met the love of his life, Lucille Ziebell, and they married in 1942, a marriage that lasted for 70 years, until Lucille died in 2012. Bob and Lucille had two children, Donald Kalsched (Robin) of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Diane Kalsched Hoge of Naples Florida. Their four grandchildren are: Lynn Kalsched-Osgood of Austin Texas, Jonathan Kalsched of Maplewood New Jersey, Dr. Ann Klopp of Houston Texas, and Dr. Michael Hoge, a major in the U.S. Air Force in Alexandria Virginia. Dr. Kalsched is further survived by eight great grandchildren. Robert was an avid sportsman and outdoorsman and every season of the year brought new opportunities for his interests in Wisconsin fields and streams. He fished trout in the spring with his own hand-tied trout-flies, walleyes in the summer with his own hand-crafted jigs and baits; he hunted grouse and deer in the uplands and ducks and geese on the Mississippi River with his own hand-painted decoys. In the winters, he made hunting knives in his basement and fletched his own arrows for archery practice. He was an avid trap shooter and won awards in Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin. He loved to play golf and amazed his friends in later years by consistently shooting several strokes under his age. An amateur poet, he was also an accomplished photographer and mastered Photoshop in his 80's, allowing him to enhance his wildlife photographs, many taken in one of his favorite places, the Sandhill State Wildlife Refuge, south of town. Those who wish may make a contribution in his memory to the Friends of Sandhill Inc., c/o Vicki Palen, Treasurer; 3837 County Hwy N; Milladore, WI 54454. A private memorial service will be held at the grave site on October 11th and a family Celebration of Life will be held next spring at the Sandhill Wildlife Refuge near Pittsville. The family wishes to give special thanks to his neighbors Alvin and Donna Berres and to the caregivers at Three Oaks Golden Living Center where he spent the last year of his life.
