Dr. H James Nickerson passed away in Marshfield, Wisconsin, on August 10, 2011 at the age of 73 years. He was born on December 7, 1937 in St. Ansgar, Iowa, the fourth of five children. He was raised on a farm in Iowa and began his education at a country school in Mitchell County, before attending the community public school in his hometown of St. Ansgar. After graduating from high school in 1956, Dr. Nickerson enrolled at Iowa State University with the intention of studying civil engineering. He soon discovered that his real professional aspiration was to be a physician and changed his major to pre-medicine. While at Iowa State, he was a member of Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity. In 1959, Dr. Nickerson began medical school at University of Iowa where he was a member of Phi Beta Pi medical fraternity. In 1960, he married his high school sweetheart, Gretta Ellen Mueller. During medical school, he received an officers commission to the United States Navy and, after graduating in 1963, moved to Philadelphia where he completed his pediatric residency at the Naval Hospital and Childrens Hospital. In 1966, Dr. Nickerson was assigned by the Navy to the military hospital at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. While stationed at Camp Lejeune, he successfully passed the Board Certification examination in Pediatrics. In 1969, he was honorably discharged from the Navy and moved with his young family to Clinton, Iowa where he began a private practice in Pediatrics. In 1970, he moved to Marshfield to continue his Pediatric practice at the Marshfield Clinic. Dr. Nickerson was dedicated and steadfast in providing medical care to children, his professional passion, until his retirement in 2002. During his career, he received Board Certification in Hematology and Oncology and was a clinical researcher, publishing numerous papers on Hematology, Oncology, and Pediatrics, including ground breaking research on the effects of iron deficiency in female adolescent athletes. Dr. Nickerson belonged to several professional organizations including the Childrens Oncology Group of the Upper Midwest, the International Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, and the American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr. Nickerson loved his family and friends and will always be remembered as a gentle, humble humanitarian, a man of few words. He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Marshfield and enjoyed singing in the church choir. Dr. Nickerson loved the outdoors and enjoyed golf (his recreational passion), fishing, nordic and alpine skiing, camping, biking, and hiking. He is survived by his wife, Gretta; son Bill Nickerson of Longmont, CO; daughters Martha Cousino (Gary) of Mackinac Island, MI; Jennifer Youngberg (David) of Rochester, MN; and Katie Carson (David) of Camas, WA; five grandchildren, Nicole, Madeline, and Julia Youngberg, and Emily and Andrew Carson; and three step-grand children Kipp, Gordie, and Riann Cousino. He is also survived by two brothers, Verle (Evelyn) Nickerson of St. Ansgar, IA and Gene (Nedra) Nickerson of Paridise Valley, AZ, and two sisters Joanne Borchardt of Holland, IA and Mary Loomer of Minneapolis, MN. His parents, Harold and Rose Nickerson preceded him in death. A celebration of his remarkable life will take place with a visitation at Rembs Funeral Home, 300 South Oak Avenue from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, August 18th, 2011, and at 12 p.m on August 19th at the church. His memorial service will be held at Christ Lutheran Church, 1208 W. 14th Street, at 1 p.m. on Friday, August 19th, 2011 with Rev. Mark A. Krueger officiating. Memorial contributions may be given to the Childrens Miracle Network, House of the Dove in Marshfield, Christ Lutheran Church, or a charity or organization of your choice.
