Obituary

Douglas Euart Gorst, Sr., age 87, of Pittsville, WI, passed away Tuesday, May 3, 2016 at Atrium Post Acute Care, Marshfield, of complications from a stroke he suffered in March 2004. Born October 15, 1928 in the Town of Hiles, Wood County, Wisconsin, he was the son of Claire and May (Hanson) Gorst. He married Doris Ella (Schultz) Gorst on September 2, 1950 in Pittsville, Wis. Douglas joined the Navy in 1946, serving as Seaman, 2nd Class, during WWII aboard the Cruiser USS Fresno. He received the WWII Victory Metal for his service to his country. He also served during the Korean War aboard the Destroyer USS Dashiell until July 1952, receiving an Honorable Discharge. Douglas remained in the US Naval Reserves until December 1955. Doug and his wife farmed in Pittsville, WI, and he was a professional trapper and fur trader until the time of his stroke. Being a very patriotic citizen, after his service in the military, Doug was an American Legion member for 62 years where he served in many capacities including Wood County Commander. Doug was also an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, snowshoeing, running local marathons, and participating in the Badger State Winter Olympics and is a member of the Midwest Snowshoe Conference. Doug was a member of the National Trappers Association and served several years as a delegate to the Wisconsin Conservation Congress where he participated in the debate and drafting of Natural Resource Legislation. Douglas is survived by his wife of 65 years Doris (Schultz) Gorst; daughters Cathy Gorst of Marshfield, WI, Donna (Bobby) of Marshfield, WI, Carol (Dan) Shoults of Thousand Oaks, CA, Tina (Jason) Erickson of Deerfield, WI, and Judi (Dale) Einerson of Madison, WI,; sons Douglas (Bettyann) Gorst, Jr. of Pittsville, WI, and Joe (Rik Nelson) Gorst of San Diego, CA; a sister Mary Parker of Arpin, WI; a brother Leslie Lemke of Arpin, WI; 8 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Pat, a brother Charles, and his twin brother Claire. Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 7, 2016 at 12:00 p.m. at the Buchanan/Rembs Funeral Home in Pittsville, Wisconsin with Rev. Wanda Veldman of the Veedum Moravian Church, officiating. Viewing will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Pallbearers will be Jason Erickson, Dale Einerson, Ronald Parker, Jr., Jeremy Peterson, James Gorst, and Kerry Lindberg. Burial will take place at Mound Cemetery, Pittsville, WI, with honor guard services by The American Legion Post 54 of Marshfield, WI. Lunch and fellowship to follow at the Veedum Moravian Church, County Road E, Pittsville, Wis.
