Obituary

Doris Ida Shoemaker, 87, was called to eternal life on Wednesday, March 16th 2016. She was born Doris Ida Jensen on February 3rd, 1929 to Herbert and Edith Jensen of City Point, Wisconsin. She attended Pittsville High School and earned her bachelor degree in teaching from the University of Stevens Point, Wisconsin. She married the love of her life, Lyman Oakley Shoemaker, on December 20th, 1952 and lived in Tomah, Wisconsin where she taught elementary school for several years. After she and her husband moved to City Point, Doris left teaching to focus on her family and enjoy time with her three children. Shortly after the family moved to Pittsville, Wisconsin in 1965, Doris lost her husband in a work related accident. She remained in Pittsville the remainder of her life. Doris returned to teaching for the Pittsville School District. Her passion was teaching; she loved children and spent her career advocating for them. Doris had a talent for discovering and nurturing the gift within every child. She had a heart for students who found learning challenging. Through their struggle to learn, she remained a constant support and positive influence. It was a joy for her to help others, and share her knowledge. She was a teacher at heart all her life, never losing her encouraging spirit. She retired from teaching to be a full time Nana in 1995. Doris loved and cherished her family and always had time to sit over a cup of coffee, play on the floor with the children she loved, or offer the wisdom that seemed to come so effortlessly from a generous heart. She was mother and grandmother to many, making room in her heart and home for more than just those of her relation. She understood the need for a tender response, a warm hand to hold, and the patience only a loving heart can give. She was Mom, Auntie, Nana to her grandsons, Dodo to her family and friends, and of course Mrs. Shoemaker to hundreds of students. Doris was greeted in heaven by her husband, Lyman; her parents Herb and Edith Jensen; her sisters Norma Nordman-Behling and husbands Everett and Milton, Lois Reshel and husband Martin, Joy Zieher and husband Ronald, Marjorie Jacobson; and brother Orman Jensen; her niece Marilyn Dudovick; her nephews Martin Reshel Jr., and Auggie Jordan; her great niece Dawn Dudovick; and great nephew Max Lulich. She was also reunited with her mother in law, Clara Shoemaker-Reshel and her husband's Lyman and Roman; sisters and brothers in law, Betty and Ben Reshel, Susan Shoemaker, Dorothy and Bud Hermann, Lorraine and David Shoemaker, Roger Shoemaker, Bob Ostrowski, and Joe Russo. She leaves a loving family to finish the race until they join her in heaven: Daughters and sons Debra and Mike Coon, Duane Shoemaker, Deanna and Bob Leigh; grandchildren Jacob, Laura and Nathan Leigh; and great nephews Daniel, Sean and Connor Hughes, who were her other grandsons. She also leaves many wonderful brothers and sisters in law: Jenny and Burt Score, Herb and Jean Shoemaker, Caroline Russo, Bill Shoemaker, Clara and Nick Gonnering, Shirley and John Tolekson, Bev and Terry Kimball, Rick Reshel and George Jacobson. She will be missed by her many loving nieces and nephews, and her dear "sister-friend" and partner in adventures, Lois Leigh. We wish to thank our cousins Dale and Tom Hanutke, Kristin Hughes, and Wes and Ginger Reshel for their love, support, and constancy in mom's life, especially these last few years. When the need was great you were always there. She loved you all so very much. We also wish to thank Cathy Heuer for her unwaivering and gentle support of our mother; not only did you look after mom, you looked after us too. And many thanks to the wonderful staff at The House of the Dove for their compassion and outstanding care. Please join us on Saturday, April 2nd at the City Point Community Center to celebrate Doris' life. We will have a time of remembrance at 11:00 am with food and fellowship to follow. A memorial will be established in Doris' name to benefit the children of the Pittsville School District. Condolences may be sent online to www.rembsfh.com
