Obituary

David A. Bushman, 75, of Marshfield died the morning of Wednesday, May 13, 2026 at the House of the Dove Hospice surrounded by his family and under the care of Compassus Hospice.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial for David will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, May 20th at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Marshfield. The family welcomes relatives and friends for visitation 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm Tuesday at Rembs Funeral Home, and 9:30 until service time Wednesday at church. Lunch will be served at the Eagles’ Club following the funeral Mass. A private interment will be scheduled later.

David was born June 29, 1950 in Marshfield to Ambrose and Virgene (Mews) Bushman. He attended school in Marshfield, graduating in 1968 from Marshfield Senior High. David was united in marriage to Diane Marie Huber on September 29, 1973 at Christ the King Catholic Church in Spencer.

Dave was a man who could light up the room with laughter, whether telling stories around the kitchen table with family, up north or out for coffee with the guys, or attending a steak feed or fish fry at the Eagles Club or a local establishment (probably while selling raffle tickets). He and his family were active members of the Bakerville Sno-Rovers snowmobile club; one of his most cherished traditions was the annual “guys’ trip” snowmobiling up north. Dave and Diane could often be found camping, especially at the Hodag Country Festival, a tradition they enjoyed for 42 years. He enjoyed hunting, being outdoors, four-wheeling, Nascar racing, mowing the lawn, and saving many coffee cans of who-knows-what in his man-garage out back.

Family was the most important thing in Dave’s life; he was a steadfast and generous provider and presence at family occasions and activities. He helped out on his family farm since childhood and, after moving just down Ives Street into the house he and Diane built, he would check in at the home place almost daily to make sure everything was in order and maybe have a bit of lunch with Grandma Jean. Married to Diane for nearly 53 years, they raised two boys and remained true to one another in sickness and health, good times and bad. He was a provider as he worked at Hub City Foods, later Fleming, driving truck since 1969 until his retirement in 2003. Dave’s sons, daughters-in-law, and grandchildren were his pride and joy. They never doubted his love and devotion as he held babies in his strong arms (provided no diapers were involved), enjoyed four-wheeling or just playing in the backyard, and attended countless sacramental celebrations, milestone events, and sports or other activities.

Dave’s faith, though quiet, was always an important part of his life. He was a lifelong Catholic and member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church. Dave considered the years he was given after his cancer diagnosis to be a miracle and was deeply grateful for all the prayers offered on his behalf. In the words of the country song, he “loved deeper, spoke sweeter, and gave forgiveness” more freely - but still with his signature wit and sparkle in his eye. He endured his illness with Diane by his side; as the strong man he was, he was working outside up until his final days. His family is deeply grateful for all Dave has done for them, for the care and comfort of his health providers and hospice, for all the prayers known and unknown, and for the chance to say goodbye.

Enjoy coffee or a cold beer. Ride your snowmobile or four-wheeler. Watch the sun set over a lake. Mow the lawn. Hug your family tighter. Wear a flannel shirt and cap. Say a prayer. Laugh, cry, and remember Dave Bushman. We know his spirit will be close by.

David is survived by his wife Diane, their sons: Patrick (Molly) Bushman and Ryan (Marsha) Bushman, and grandchildren: Jackson, Eva, Elyse, Jolie, Taylor, and Ashlyn. He is further survived by his siblings: Beverly Stoflet, Nancy (Gene) Hill, Bonnie Gripentrog, Darwin (Konny) Bushman, Sandy (John) Bilgrien, and sister-in-law Cheryl Bushman.

He was preceded in death by his parents Amber & Jean Bushman, Diane’s parents Elroy & Harriet Huber, brother Robert Bushman, brother-in-law Jon Gripentrog, sister-in-law Vicky Huber, nephews Aaron Gripentrog and Trai Whetstone, and niece Gina Hill.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in David’s honor to the Bakerville Sno-Rovers, Marshfield FFA Alumni, or a charitable cause of your choice.

The family wishes to extend their deepest appreciation to the staff at House of the Dove (especially Brooke & Cari) for the loving care they gave David during his illness.
