Damian L. Ernest, 48, of Ontonagon, MI, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of Saturday, May 18, 2024, at UW Health University Hospital, Madison, WI, with his parents by his side.
A celebration of life will be held at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, with a gathering beginning at 6:30 pm and a reception to follow at Rembs Celebration Center, 250 South Oak Av., Marshfield, WI. The service will be streamed online at www.facebook.com/rembsfuneralhomes.
Damian was born June 25, 1975, in Ontonagon, MI to Richard and Tina (Knickerbocker) Ernest. After graduating from Ontonagon High School in 1993, he attended Northern Michigan University, earning a bachelor's degree in English education and a master's in writing. He later earned a Master of Fine Arts in theater from the University of Idaho.
Damian began his career as an educator by teaching high school English and theater in Bessemer, MI, and Greenfield, WI. He then held college teaching and directing positions at Waldorf College, IA, Highland Community College, KS, and the University of Idaho. In 2012, he became an assistant professor of communication and theatre arts for the University of Wisconsin in Marshfield/Wood County where he was granted tenure, and in 2018 he transferred to the University of Wisconsin Baraboo/Sauk County.
Damian's talent extended beyond the classroom. He was a gifted actor and a skillful carpenter, frequently working as a freelance or seasonal artist in community and professional companies. Throughout his career, Damian brilliantly directed and expertly designed over fifty productions for university, community, and professional theater. He made a difference in the lives of all who knew him.
Damian is survived by his parents, one brother, Richard Jr. (Christina), and one nephew, Otto, all of Ontonagon. He was preceded in death by his grandparents.
