Bonnie was born on August 14, 1943 in Manitowoc to Chester and Margaret (Handl) Meindl. She graduated from Lincoln High School and Holy Family School of Nursing, both in Manitowoc. Bonnie was united in marriage to Richard M. Meyer on October 31, 1964 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manitowoc. He passed away on April 27, 2020.
Bonnie was a resident of Marshfield for 57 years. She and her husband Dick knew nearly everyone in town, if not directly, then by association with a relative or friend. With every trip to the store or visit to the clinic, Bonnie would greet people. If she met someone she didn’t already know, Bonnie would quickly discover they were the brother-in-law of an old co-worker or the daughter of a friend’s sister. She would laugh and say “everybody knows everybody in Marshfield”.
Bonnie was richly involved in her community. As she supported the people around her, likewise her community supported her.
After becoming a nurse in 1964, Bonnie Meyer moved to Marshfield. She worked for St. Joseph’s Hospital for more than 25 years. In the 1960’s and 1970’s she was a surgical and pediatric nurse.
Bonnie also served her community as a home care nurse for Wood County Public Health from 1979-1989. She visited patients in their homes all over Wood County, going out in the worst possible weather and on evenings and weekends to meet patients’ needs for care. Before there was hospice care, she sat with families as their loved ones died. She brought comfort and compassion to countless people.
Later, Bonnie was a home care coordinator, discharge planner, and case manager from 1989 to 2004 when she retired.
Bonnie and Dick were active members of St. John’s Catholic Church in Marshfield for nearly 60 years. They often served as lectors, communion distributors or by singing in the funeral choir.
Bonnie was a member of the Marshfield Garden Club. Throughout her life, she took great joy in growing flowers and making space for the birds. She loved cardinals best of all. Bonnie also enjoyed singing and playing the ukulele and sharing cheerful music as part of the Marshfield Ukulele Group. She could often be seen at the Marshfield YMCA, and before that at Curves.
Bonnie and Dick enjoyed many outings and travels and made many happy memories with the “Seniors on the Move” group.
Bonnie regularly enjoyed time with all sorts of her wonderful friends, including her weekly book club led by Sister Virdean, the Wednesday Central Cafe group, her monthly “Duplex Divas” lunches and get togethers with many other of her friends and former co-workers.
After her husband Dick died, Bonnie sold her house, rented a duplex, and became part of an amazing new neighborhood. She was grateful beyond measure for the friendship and generous kindness of her neighbors who checked in on her every day, took her to appointments, brought her food, and even called the ambulance for her several times. In the last several years as her health struggles increased, Bonnie’s neighbors, friends, and family have visited and supported her in so many marvelous ways.
Bonnie was showered with so much care and kindness right through her final days. Her family would like to thank everyone who visited her and prayed for her and sent their love and good wishes.
Bonnie treasured her community, friends, and especially her family. They all made her life rich with blessings. Her light-hearted sense of humor, her kindness, and her joy for life will be missed by all of us.
She is survived by her children, Catherine (Rob) James of Redmond, WA, Michael (Lisa Kay) Meyer of Hubbell, MI, and David (Bonnie) Meyer of Marshfield, grandchildren, Elizabeth Trione-James, Drew Meyer, Ian James, Carli Meyer, Tessa Meyer, and Ellie Meyer.
She is further survived by her brother, Jack Meindl of Manitowoc.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, children at birth, Timothy, Margaret, and Steven, sisters, Virgene Ciha and Eunice Engert, mother and father in law, Steve and Catherine Meyer, and brothers and sisters in law, Jane Meindl, Lloyd Ciha, Robert Engert, Elizabeth and James Barnes, and Leroy Meyer.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to House of the Dove or Compassus Hospice in Marshfield.
