Obituary

Bernice Ellen (Ploen) Riedel returned to God's loving arms at 2:34 P.M. on Friday December 13, 2013, surrounded by her seven children. She was the second child and first daughter born to Laura (Kipp) and Berdill Ploen on February 18, 1922 in New Hampton, Iowa. The family moved to Marshfield after the family farm was lost during the depression, and grew to include four boys and three girls. Their home was on 9th and Ash until they constructed a new home next door, where the family remained thereafter. Bea attended Sacred Heart Catholic School and graduated from Marshfield Senior High School in 1940. Friends she made in school remained companions for the rest of her life, and included Margie Krasin, Sally Siemers, Betty Craft, and Bea Rappe. Hobbies that she enjoyed include knitting, crocheting, and playing cards. There was never a more lively time in the Riedel kitchen than when the Ploen family gathered for a night of sheepshead. Christmas was her favorite time of year. She was a dedicated member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Marshfield for most of her life. Not long after the end of World War II Bea met Marvin Riedel after he returned from New Guinea. Their courtship included dances and many evenings at Marshfield establishments such as the Palm Garden and Nigs Bar. Bea and Marv were married on February 12, 1946 and built a home at 1412 Erickson Avenue where they lived until his death in 1997. Bea was an exceptionally strong person, and for more than half of her life battled the ravages brought on by Multiple Sclerosis, which was diagnosed in 1965. After a year of hospitalization, we were told that she would not walk again and would not live a long life. She never accepted either of these prognosis, and regained the ability to walk and ride a bike. She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers (Charles, Harold and Robert) and two sisters (Rosemarie Alf and Helen Baierl). Surviving members of her family include her seven children: Karen (Paul) Canady, Susan (Dennis) Meyer, JoAnn (Patrick) Davidson, Thomas (Terri) Riedel, Debra (Dan) Goska, Frederick (Vicki) Riedel, and Jon (Sarah) Riedel, 13 grandchildren (Julia Smith; Stacey Meyer; Amber Hunt, Laura Jones, and Trisha Davidson; Theran and Anna Riedel; Danielle Goska; Timothy, Brett and Aaron Riedel; and Sahale and Emma Riedel), and six great grandchildren (Asher, Jayden, Connor, Noah, Marcello, Oliver). Visitation for friends and extended family will be at 10AM on Tuesday December 17 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, followed by a mass, burial at Gates of Heaven Cemetery, and reception at the Knights of Columbus in Marshfield. The family acknowledges the thoughtful, professional care provided by the Palliative Care Unit at Saint Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield at the end of her life. Memorials may be designated in her name with the Multiple Sclerosis Society, which she supported for many years. We love you mom and will miss you this Christmas and forever after, but are comforted knowing you and Marv are together again. Condolences may be sent online to www.rembsfh.com
