Obituary

Barry Bernard Edelstein M.D. PH.D., passed away Jan 14, 2025 at his home in Marshfield. Barry was born January 25, 1939 in Brooklyn N.Y. to Sam and Eva Edelstein. He graduated from Stuyvesant High School and New York University where he received the Regents Scholarships for medicine from the state of New York May 1956 and December 1958. He was a New York University Honors Scholar in the College of Science class of June 1959.

Barry earned his Doctor of Medicine at State University of New York Down State College of Medicine June 1963. He then completed his internship in medicine at University of Chicago Hospital June 25, 1964.

But Barry was a scientist at heart and loved physics and mathematics. He went on to earn a PH.D. in theoretical biology at University of Chicago. His research at Chicago and the University of Brussels, Belgium included studies published in the Journals of Theoretical Biology 1969 and 1970. He did research with llya Prigogine, Noble Prize winner in chemistry 1977. Research funding became scarce so Barry returned to medicine and graduated from the University of Chicago earning a degree in radiology from the American college of radiology June 1975. He practiced diagnostic radiology at the University of Chicago, Christ Hospital and Medical Center Chicago, and from 1985 to 2012 at the Marshfield Clinic until his retirement.

Aside from his brilliant intellectual side, Barry loved and valued all people. He was a world traveler, competitive squash player, avid reader, jogged when able, and most of all fished the lakes on his northern Wisconsin cabin. A lover of classical and jazz music and wine he was known for a fine palate with trophies from wine tastings. Barry had a wonderful sense of humor not taking life too seriously, always ready with a good joke.

He is survived by his wife Maria, his son Scott of Rockville, Maryland, two grandchildren, Adam and Cayla Edelstein, and his brother Stuart, of Pearl River, New York. Also survived by former spouse Celina Berkowitz, Chicago, stepson Brian Mancl (Kim) Eau Claire Wi., step-grandchildren Chris, Trevor, and Zoie, and great grandchildren Aubrey and Jaxon, sisters-in-law Sharee Sifferath, AZ and Denise Kann, WI, and nephews Brian and Jason Edelstein.

Barry was predeceased by his parents, and spouse Rachael Edelstein, and stepson Matthew Mancl.

Family is grateful to Compassus Home Hospice, Marshfield respite care, special Friends and Home Health Aides, and Dr. Jerry Goldberg who provided him with wonderful care. A memorial service will be private by family as he requested.
