Art was born on May 18, 1937 in the Township of Buena Vista, Portage County, Wisconsin, to Luke & Valeria (Pawleski) Helminiak and was a 1955 graduate of Rudolph High School. He was united in marriage to Helen C. Altmann on June 6, 1959 at St. Kilian's Catholic Church in Blenker. Together they raised four children.
Art was employed at various jobs throughout his life. He worked at the International Harvester plant in Milwaukee, Midland Co-op in Junction City, and Consolidated Papers in Stevens Point. In 1962, Art and Helen took over Art's parents' farm, starting with 15 cows and 80 acres. By 1986, they had over 150 head of cattle and 500 acres. The Helminiaks "retired" from farming in 2000 following 38 years but Art continued to help his son, Mark, on the farm even in retirement. Art loved all animals and especially loved working in the fields. It was always said that he could plow the straightest furrow! In his younger years, Art played baseball for Rudolph high school and was known to be the best and only left-handed pitcher for their team. He had a love of sports during his life, following the Brewers, the Packers, the Bucks and all Badger Sports. He also enjoyed music, playing his concertina in his free time, and going to polka dances with Helen, his best date, whenever he could. For many years, Art and Helen bowled on Sunday and Tuesday night bowling leagues. He was a member of Moose International and the Knights of Columbus. Art always had a smile on his face, was a kind and gentle man, lending a hand to those in need, and loved telling a good story or joke.
He is survived by his children, Linda (Philip) Casper of Wisconsin Rapids, Glenn (Pam) Helminiak of Junction City, Jeff (Mary) Helminiak of Stevens Point, and Mark (Rosie) Helminiak of Junction City. Art is further survived by 12 grandchildren: Ashley Mart, Justin Vandehey, Jeremy Vandehey, Kody Casper, Heather Brandner, Joel, Luke, Haley, Olivia, Seth, Katie, & Kobe Helminiak; 9 great-grandchildren; and his sister Joanne (Ralph) Tryba. Art is further survived by his siblings-in-law Rhonda (Terry) Richardson, Dale (Donna) Altmann, Ed (Lois) Altmann, LeRoy (Leiann) Altmann, Cliff (Janice) Altmann, and Larry (Gwen) Altmann.
He was preceded in death by the love of his life, Helen, who he missed dearly after her passing in January of this year. In addition, Art was preceded by his parents, brothers Johnny & Joseph Helminiak, sister Bernadine and brother-in-law, Ray Infanger, two infant sisters, sister-in-law Ann and brother-in-law Jim Warmka, and son-in-law Larry Vandehey.
The family would like to especially thank Kathleen Pohlod for her wonderful help and loving care of Art and for the help and care of Compassus Home Health, especially, nurse, Cyndi Allen, and caregiver, Diane Rucinski.
At birth, Art wasn't expected to live because his birth weight was a mere pound and a half, the stat being underlined and highlighted on his birth certificate. Throughout his life, Art famously always said, "It's not how you start out, it's how you end up." We'll continue to live by your words and in your legacy, Dad, and we pray that you are now in the glory and presence of our Lord, Jesus, hearing Him say, "Well done, my good and faithful servant!"
