Alfred J. Salzmann, 89, Marshfield, died on Sunday, January 19, 2014 at House of the Dove, Marshfield. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00am on Friday, January 24, 2014 at St. John's Catholic Church, Marshfield, with Rev. Samuel Martin officiating. Burial will take place in Calvary Cemetery, Wisconsin Rapids. The visitation will be held on Friday from 10:00am until time of service at St. John's Catholic Church, with a KC Rosary at 10:45 am. Rembs Funeral Home is assisting the family. Alfred was born on April 18, 1924 in the Town of Cassel, Marathon County, to Benjamin and Anna Marie (Jansen) Salzmann. He married Barbara M. Ashbeck on August 23, 1947 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, Wisconsin Rapids. Alfred was a lifelong farmer in the Town of Marshfield. He was extremely active in soil conservation and often gave tours of his farm. He received the Outstanding Young Farmer award from the Marshfield Jaycees. Al was an active member of the Knights of Columbus John Eisen Council #1799, and was also a 4th Degree Knight, and served as pro-life chairman. After his sons were grown, Al volunteered for many years visiting hospice patients, distributing communion to patients at St. Joseph's Hospital and drove people for the Division of Aging. He is survived by his wife, Barbara and 2 sons, Bruce (Sheri) Salzmann of Independence and John (Lori) Salzmann of Marshfield. He is also survived by 3 grandchildren, Maj. Renee D. Salzmann, U.S.A.F., Kristie L. Salzmann and Steven Salzmann. He is further survived by 2 brothers, Joe Salzmann and Rudy Salzmann and a sister, Adeline Hladilek. He was predeceased by his parents, 6 brothers and 2 sisters. Memorials may be designated in his name to Ministry St. Joseph's Hospice or St. John the Baptist Catholic Parish.
