Obituary

Alexander J. "Curly" Dahlke, Sr., 84 of Edgar died peacefully at his home on September 2, 2011, with family by his side. Mass of Christian burial will be 11am Tuesday, September 6, 2011 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Edgar with Rev. Robert A. Steveler officiating. Burial will be in St. Johns Cemetery in Edgar with his grandson as pallbearers. Military rites will be conducted at the cemetery by the VFW Post # 10187 of Edgar. Visitations will be from 9am until time of the services at St. John the Baptist Church in Edgar on Tuesday, September 6th. Sauter/Rembs Funeral Home in Stratford is assisting the family with the arrangements. Alex was born on December 31, 1926 in the Town of Frankfort, Marathon County to Victor and Veronica (Wirkus) Dahlke II. He attended St. Johns Parochial School and later entered into the U.S. Marines on May 29, 1946 and was honorably discharged because of his age on June 25, 1946. He later enlisted in the U.S. Army during the Korean War on May 24, 1951 and again was discharged on May 7, 1953. Upon Alexs return from the service, he owned and operated several taverns (Dahlkes Bar & Store). Alex was also a farmer, worked in construction, was a maintenance worker for Stratford Homes and Badger Basket. Alex enjoyed fishing, hunting, berrying picking, playing sheepshead, and spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Upon his retirement, he loved to spend time mowing and keeping up the grounds at St. Johns Catholic Church. He also diligently worked on his own garden and lawn. He was married to Irene Huhn in 1951 and she died in 1974. He then married Dorothy Wells Bender in 1980 in Wuertzburg. Alex is survived by his wife Dorothy, children, Jerome (Janet) Dahlke of Edgar, Glen (LouAnn) Dahlke of Mosinee, Michael (Lynn) Dahlke of Edgar, Carol (Georgia) Dahlke of Gilbert, AZ, Veronica (Gregg) Meyer of Mauston, Gayle (Steve) Krelwitz of Ixonia, Alex (Lisa) Dahlke, Jr. of Weston, Greg (Laura) Dahlke of Weston, Raymond (Fran) Bender of Mosinee, Sharon Bender of Edgar, Wayne (Karen) Bender of Little Suamico, and Linda (Robert) Kraemer of Plymouth, WI; 29 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. He is further survived by two sisters, Myrtle Pflanzer of Abbotsford and Gertrude (Ervin) Karlen of Edgar, brother-in-law Arnold Strunk of Abbotsford and a sister-in-law Anne Dahlke of Edgar. Alex was preceded in death by his parents, wife Irene, infant daughter Debra Lynn, three brothers, Norbert, Ralph and Victor III and a sister Beatrice Strunk. Alex will be remembered and deeply missed by his family. In lieu of flowers, memorials to either St. Johns Church of School.
