Agnes “Betsy” Grassl, 101, passed away September 24, 2026, at Aster Assisted Living in Marshfield Wisconsin. She was born on August 1, 1925, in Marshfield, WI, a daughter of the late Margaret and Joseph Koller. Betsy went to school in a one room schoolhouse until fifth grade. She then went to St. Mary’s and Auburndale High in Auburndale. She graduated from St. Joseph’s School of Nursing in Marshfield in 1947 and pursued a long career at St Joseph’s Hospital working mainly in the ER.

She married Matt Grassl on June 7, 1947, and he preceded her in death in 2014.

Betsy was a devout Catholic and a long-standing member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Auburndale, WI. where she was active in St. Mary’s Alter Society.

Betsy was raised on a farm in Auburndale and Matt and Betsy farmed in Auburndale milking cows and raising crops. Betsy served on the Auburndale School Board for 7 years. She had many hobbies including quilting, knitting, reading, gardening, and doing puzzles. Even at age 99 Betsy was still doing puzzles on her iPad. She loved the outdoors and after she retired, she would walk 20 miles a week no matter what the weather. Betsy also volunteered at the Red Cross and St. Joseph’s Hospital after retirement.

After Matt died, Betsy relocated to the Regency Apts in Marshfield where she had many wonderful and caring friends. She enjoyed playing Sheepshead, Pinochle, cribbage and betting on the Packer Games.

Betsy is survived by her sister, Leone (Leslie) Smith, children, Suellen (Ken) Herwehe of Broomfield, CO, William of Ocala, FL, Charles (Kathy) of Eagan, MN, Mark of Madison, WI, and David (Lois) of Lakeville, MN. She has six grandchildren: Meghan (Andy Pendl) Herwehe of Denver, CO, Brandon (Jeanna)Herwehe, of Holly Springs, NC, Lauren Herwehe (Gary Schomberger), Eagle, CO, Melissa Grassl of Minneapolis, MN and Annika Bilek (Jon) of Eagan, MN. Three great-grandchildren, Alice, Harper, and Emerson also survive Betsy.

She was preceded in death by Matt, one son, Howard, brothers Francis and Jack Koller and a sister Jean Kohlbeck.

Betsy touched many lives and will be remembered fondly for her love of family, strong will, and independence.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, October 2 at 11 AM at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Auburndale with visitation from 10-11 AM at the church. The Wisconsin Nurses Honor Guard will perform a tribute prior to the start of the service. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Auburndale, WI.
